
Efrain Bleiberg
Efrain Bleiberg, MD. is an adult and child and adolescent psychiatrist, child, adolescent, adult, family and couples psychotherapist and adult and child psychoanalyst.
He completed adult and child and adolescent psychiatry at the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry and Mental Health Sciences where he also obtained specialty training in couples and family therapy. He graduated in adult and child psychoanalysis from The Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis. He is certified in Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has been designated a distinguished fellow by the American Psychiatry Association. He is also a distinguished fellow of The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and is certified in Psychoanalysis by The American Psychoanalytic Association.
Dr. Bleiberg worked at The Menninger Clinic for over 40 years, serving as Director of Education and Research, Director of the Children’s Division, and President and Chief of staff. With Peter Fonagy he founded The Child and Family Research Center, which made seminal contributions to attachment and mentalization research and to the development of Mentalization-based Treatment with children, adolescents and families.
Dr. Bleiberg moved to Houston, Texas when The Menning Clinic moved to Texas to create a partnership with Baylor College of Medicine. In Houston Dr. Bleiberg was professor and Vice Chair and Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at The Menninger Department of Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine and Chief of Psychiatry at Texas Children’s Hospital. He is also training and supervising psychoanalyst and educational consultant with The Houston Center for Psychoanalytic Studies.
Currently he resides in Houston and is Professor of Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at The Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine, maintains a private practice and is a consultant with The Menninger Clinic and The Center for Psychoanalytic Studies.
He has published extensively papers, book chapters and books, including Treating Personality Disorders in Children and Adolescents, 2001, Guilford Press, winner of The Gravida Award and the forthcoming Mentalization-based Treatment with Children, Adolescents and Families.
